Amplifying Community Safety: Reinstating Responsible Firearm Ownership

The event took place in Chula Vista, at the South Bay Courthouse, and saw the public hand in over 112 unwanted firearms.
Exchange Scheme and Consequent Firearm Processing
Those individuals who decided to remove a firearm from circulation were rewarded with gift cards, adding an incentive dimension to the event. Handguns, rifles, and shotguns were exchanged for $100 gift cards, while assault weapons fetched $200 gift cards.
All the firearms collected in the event are now undergoing due process. Notably, any firearm linked to a crime will be referred to the respective law enforcement agency. Stolen firearms when identified, will be reverted to their rightful owners, and the remaining ones will be destroyed under law.
Collaboration with Law Enforcement Partners
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office didn’t embark on this journey alone. They garnered support from several law enforcement partners: the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Coronado Police Department, National City Police Department, and the San Diego Police Department. All these collective efforts amplified the success of the Gun Safety Event.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s office encourages members of the public to keep contributing to this cause by turning in guns they don’t need or want at any Sheriff’s station or substation. The Office guarantees a safe process for surrendering firearms. Citizens are advised to keep the firearms in the trunk of their car and await further instructions dependent on individual law enforcement agency protocols.
